The Fall '15 Transfer Students took a trip to Lapp Valley Farms right here in Lancaster, PA. We had a great time touring their dairy farm, seeing the animals and enjoying some delicious ice cream! Although we couldn't avoid the farm fresh smell, feeding the cows and taking endless selfies with them was a highlight of the trip.
"Move-in" Day is Thursday, August 25. Orientation will begin later that evening and will continue until Tuesday, August 30.
Arriving to campus for the first time after transferring can be a bit overwhelming, we know! To make your transition smoother, we have designed a transfer specific orientation program.
Here's what you can expect at orientation:
Thursday, August 25:
-Move in to your dorm room and meet with your orientation leaders
Take the first half of your day to get settled into your new dorm room. Afterwards, in the New College House seminar room, you'll get the chance to meet your fellow transfer students and orientation leaders.
-College House induction ceremony and parent departure
Each transfer student is assigned to a College House, just like our first-year students. At the induction ceremony, you will receive a college house t-shirt and participate in songs and chants to represent your College House. After this, it's time to say bye to parents and let the real fun begin.
-Welcome reception with Dr. Porterfield
Dr. Porterfield holds a reception each year in the Alumni Sports and Fitness Center to welcome the years newest students. Listen to our College President speak as well as members of the student body. Who knows, he might even call you on stage to say hello!
Last year, transfer students all gathered around the table for a family style dinner at Gypsy Kitchen right across the street from campus. Side Note: Gypsy Kitchen is owned and operated by an F&M alum!
Friday, August 26 -Monday, August 30:
-Language Placement Exam
If you still need to take a language placement exam upon arriving to campus, this is the time to do so.
At this time, you will meet with your academic advisor for the first time. You will have plenty of time to organize your schedule and re-work it if needed.
-Central Market Trip
Last year, our transfer students took a trip to Central Market on a nice sunny Saturday. Central Market is an indoor market in downtown Lancaster where you can buy fresh produce, meats, and other delicious foods and treats.
-College House Dinners
Each College House puts on an orientation dinner at the beginning of the year. Students dress up and go to a fancy venue in the Lancaster area where they are served a sit down dinner and can meet other students from their college house.
Skit night has always been an orientation favorite. Orientation leaders come together to put on hilarious skits about arriving to college and all those first-time adventures you might encounter along the way.
Transfer students are given the opportunity to register for classes. If you'd like to make any last-minute changes to your academic plan, now is the time to do so.
-Public Safety, Alcohol Education and Speak About It Presentations
Even though you might have heard these talks at your last institution, it is important for every F&M student to be up to date on our school policies so we can ensure you're staying safe while having fun.
Awkward Ball is held annually in Mayser Gymnasium. It is a time for orientation leaders and students to get together and dress in crazy outfits while dancing, eating, and bonding!
