Tutoring & Mentoring Volunteer Opportunities
Contact me, Christina Phillips '10, the Tutoring & Mentoring volunteer intern in the Ware Institute if you have questions about tutoring and mentoring children.
The national America Reads Challenge was announced by former President Bill Clinton in August 1996. This initiative called on all citizens, specifically college and university students, to participate actively in the education of elementary school children. In response to this initiative, the college community was challenged to establish a pilot program to serve the SDoL. The enthusiastic response of Franklin & Marshall students to the program led to the development and expansion of year-round service.
Since 1997, Franklin & Marshall began a tutoring and mentoring program that serves schools in the School District of Lancaster (SDoL). Franklin & Marshall students tutor for one hour or more each week, both during regular school hours and in after school programs. Since its inception, this program has had over 1,000 volunteers.
There are many opportunities to make a difference in the life of a child! There are plenty of options! Both elementary and middle-school aged children need help. You can tutor an individual child, lead group activities, tutor in a specific subject and help with general homework. Choose a day and time that fits YOUR schedule!
