The Manheim Summer Mentoring Program, a joint program of Franklin & Marshall College and The Manheim Central School District, celebrates its 10th year of bringing F&M students together with at-risk kids for an afternoon summer camp.

The Manheim Summer Mentoring Program started in 1998 with a donation from Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dale Frey ’54. That year three interns worked with a handful of at-risk youth at a neighborhood drop-in center in Manheim, Pa., where Frey grew up.

Over the past decade the program has grown thanks to the continued support of Frey and local foundations that have donated funding.

In 2007, Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment and Frey again increased their financial support of the program, and it now supports nine interns who work with 27 children. Thanks to the donations, the program became an all-day camp working with at-risk middle school students to develop social and emotional awareness, behavior management and problem-solving skills.

In 2008, the program received a grant from the Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation. The program is now supported by an annual budget of nearly $50,000.

The F&M students involved with the program during the summer of 2009 included Amy Cawley ’09, Debbie Gallardo ’10, Al Gianforti ’09, Matthew Jenschke ’09, Jennifer Jin ’09, Drew Korns ’10,Matthew Lin ’11, Fred Robinson ’11 and Zachary Romash ’09.
