The redesign project for the Franklin & Marshall College website moves to its next milestone on Tuesday, Jan. 28, with a town hall meeting from 3-4 p.m. in Stahr Auditorium, Stager Hall Room 102.
Faculty, students, and professional staff who have concerns about the current website design and ideas or questions about the redesign are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting, where representatives of Web designer P'unk Ave will present a project overview, discuss strategies and the redesign concept. Feedback is strongly encouraged.
The College's Website Redesign Working Group of faculty, students and staff has been working with P'unk Ave since the redesign's official launch in November 2013 to confirm the project's goals and schedules.
"In our technological age, a college's website is the single most important vehicle for an institution presenting itself to the world," said F&M Vice President for Communications Cass Cliatt, chair of the working group. "We aim to engage the community in creating a site for Franklin & Marshall that inspires, motivates, and meets the needs of our many constituencies, with a focus on the primary users of any college website, prospective students."
Guiding principles for the website redesign include:
· Creating a site with architecture, navigation and features that strongly position F&M as a top higher education institution among the College's external constituencies across the country and around the world
· Ensuring the capacity of the site to showcase the strengths of the College, including the attributes of cultivating academic excellence, fostering supportive communities, and providing individualized attention that launch students to lives of making a difference
· Ensuring the site is user-friendly for individuals without a substantial working knowledge of F&M -- especially the primary audience of prospective students -- while also serving the needs of current faculty, students, and professional staff
· Creating flexibility in templates and design that allow departments, offices, and programs to express their identities, tailored to the audiences that most use the College's website
· Increasing capacity for multimedia, integration with social media, and interactive applications
· Optimizing visits to the site by creating a homepage that makes accessible the information that primary users seek out most often
Throughout November and December 2013, P'unk Ave conducted website-specific research for the College. Its designers will share their findings and discuss the strategies to redesign a website with functionality, flexibility, adaptability, scalability, and consistency outlined in the guiding principles.
Faculty, students, and professional staff are strongly encouraged to ask questions at the meeting and offer feedback on the redesign strategies that the Philadelphia-based firm is following as it moves progressively toward finishing the project this fall.
