There are a number of ways to gain experience before you graduate from F&M. From internships to studying abroad to holding a leadership position in a club or sport, these activities can help enhance your skills for future employment.
Let a Career Coach help you identify and prepare for opportunities to gain experience!
Internships
It is strongly recommended that students have at least one professional internship upon graduation. An internship can enhance your interpersonal skills, increase your potential as a full-time hire (upon graduation), and inform you about career fields of interest. Internships are also an excellent way to gain practical experience. Many opportunities are available year-round. Positions may be paid or unpaid, however many unpaid internships provide the opportunity for you to earn credit.
International & Off-Campus Study (Study Abroad)
Studying abroad is another great way to gain experience and broaden your horizons. Some programs even have an internship component. Visit the Office of International Programs to learn about opportunities all over the world. Studying abroad can also be a stepping stone for students thinking about an international career.
Volunteering
There are numerous opportunities to get involved in the Lancaster community during the school year or in your home town during breaks. Volunteering can be a robust experience providing learning opportunities similar to what an internship offers. The Ware Institute for Civic Engagement has partnerships and administers several volunteer programs, as described on their web site. Another source for identifying non-profit organizations in need of volunteers in the The United Way.
Community Based Learning Internships-for-Credit
F&M has established several Community Based Learning Internships-for-Credit.
