Substance Use Assessments

Students who are concerned about their substance use may schedule an appointment for a confidential substance use assessment. Students may also be required to complete a substance use assessment as a result of a violation of the College’s Alcohol and Drug Policy. When a student is referred for a required assessment the results of their assessment remain confidential. With the student’s written permission, Counseling Services informs the referring Dean only that the student has attended the required session(s).

Counseling Services utilizes the BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) model to assist students in examining their own behavior and choices related to alcohol and other substance use. The goal of the BASICS program is to reduce risky behaviors and harmful consequences associated with substance use.

The BASICS program, conducted by a licensed psychologist with a specialty in substance abuse treatment, typically involves two sessions. During the first session information about the student’s current substance use is collected in a clinical interview and through several questionnaires. This information is then used to create a personalized feedback profile for the student that is reviewed and discussed during the second session. In light of this objective information, students can assess their own risk factors and if appropriate, consider potential changes to help reduce their risk of experiencing future negative consequences as a result of their substance use.

e-CHUG and e-TOKE

Franklin & Marshall subscribes to two web programs that enable students to obtain objective, personalized feedback about their alcohol (e-chug) or marijuana (e-toke) use through a convenient on-line self-assessment. Students can do the e-chug or e-toke programs simply by clicking on the links below. Information students provide in these programs is completely confidential. Student names are not attached to the assessments and no personally identifiable information is stored or reported to F&M.

Students, who wish to discuss their results with the Counseling Services’ substance abuse specialist, may print their profile after doing the e-chug or e-toke program and call Counseling Services to schedule an appointment.

Students who violate the College’s Alcohol and Drug Policy may be required to complete e-chug or e-toke and review their results with Counseling Services’ substance abuse specialist. Results of the student’s e-chug/e-toke remain confidential. With the student’s written permission, Counseling Services informs the referring Dean only that the student has attended the required session.
