Hurricane Irene Update

Aug. 28, 2011

Dear Students and Members of the Campus Community,

Strong NW winds from Hurricane Irene will continue to impact the region through the rest of today. Strong wind gusts of over 45 MPH will occur into early this evening.

Please continue to use caution when walking across campus and traveling throughout the city. Although power has not been affected on campus it is out in many areas of the City causing traffic signals to be out.

Overnight we experienced high winds and heavy rains. Fortunately we only had a few buildings that were affected by the rain. However a significant amount of grounds clean-up will take place over the next several days due to downed tree limbs and branches.

Campus is operating on a normal schedule.

Thank you again for your cooperation and understanding.

Dear Students and Members of the Campus Community:

I am writing to provide you with some important information regarding campus operations as a result of Hurricane Irene.

Our Facilities and Operations Team has been working around the clock since Thursday readying the campus for the storm. They will monitor rain and wind damage throughout the night and into the morning.

Regularly scheduled Orientation programs are currently not affected and will be held as scheduled. Updates and instructions will be given if the schedule needs to be modified.

Essential college personnel as well as some additional staff will report to the campus to maintain critical operations should they be needed to return college operations to normal status.

If at all possible please stay inside during the storm. If you are walking on campus please do not seek shelter under trees. If there is an urgent need to travel this evening or tomorrow, please notify someone and advise them of your travel plans, your expected return and communicate regular updates regarding your progress. If you find yourself in an emergency situation call 911 or Public Safety at (717) 291-3939.

Depending on the severity of the storm, campus operations may be impacted. We are asking for everyone to remain flexible and understand that we are dealing with conditions rarely experienced on campus.

Over the next few days, email instructions will continue as necessary.

Impacts Due To Hurricane Irene and most likely impact on PA this weekend:

  • Eastern third of state
  • Strong winds/downed trees/power outages
  • Heavy rainfall/flooding with up to 3" of rain expected. There is a Flood Warning in effect for the Conestoga River in Lancaster. (For students and faculty new to the area, this usually means Marietta Pike and Harrisburg Ave. near Longs Park becomes covered with water.)

Precautionary Preparedness Actions include:

Never drive cars through flooded areas! The water may be too deep to allow safe passage. Most deaths that occur during flooding are related to vehicles trying to cross flooded roadways.

Campus Or Individual Emergencies

Public Safety will be fully staffed throughout the storm. If you have an emergency, please call them at (717) 291-3939 for assistance. Public Safety has a 4 wheel drive vehicle that will allow them to access any College property.

Food Service

Sodexo, the College's Dining Service, is adequately stocked with food and supplies for the storm's duration. Normal hours of operation for the dining hall will be followed throughout the storm. Jazzman's will be open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Pandini's will open Monday.

For up to date information throughout the weekend, you can call the College's Information Line by dialing (717) 291-4003 or check the College's website at www.fandm.edu . You may also monitor local television and radio stations for continued updates on the storm.
