A Message from the Campaign Chair
Dear Friends:
Those of us who studied in the fields of government and business can quickly reel off a long list of professors who inspired, challenged and befriended us: Sid Wise, John Vanderzell, Richard Schier, Stan Michalak, Bob Gray, Grier Stephenson, Noel Laird, Albert Bell, Winthrop Everett, Henry Jaenicke, Alan Glazer ’69, and Con Kasperson, among others.
These were not ivory-tower professors. They were hands-on pragmatists who understood that business and politics are about people and relationships. We are lucky at Franklin & Marshall—we experience extraordinary teachers who provide undergraduates extraordinary teaching.
A liberal arts education is still the finest preparation for success in a global economy and in a free society. The College has an obligation to prepare its students for a world where business and government are not silos but are very much interrelated—a world that is faster, more global and more interconnected than my mentor Sid Wise could have envisioned.
I am thrilled to report that the superior teaching, scholarship and mentorship I encountered as an undergraduate are still hallmarks of the F&M experience. My son Andy ’09 is a government major, and I’m impressed by the breadth of courses he takes, the teaching he experiences, and the guidance he receives. The spirit on campus and pride in the College are remarkable and gratifying.
All alumni and current students can point to professors who were crucial to their development as learners, leaders and citizens. By supporting the Campaign for Business, Government & Public Policy, you can honor and perpetuate their legacies with a new generation of academic leadership.
This campaign will secure the College’s place as a leader in the fields of business, government and public policy for decades to come. Please join me in being a partner in this bold initiative.
