Image Use on the Web - Guidelines for F&M Web Sites
When choosing images to use on your institutional Web pages, please be mindful not to infringe on copyright.
In general, follow the same guidelines you would use when submitting images for a print publication. Be sure to have permission from the creator or owner of an image.
In general, it is OK to use:
- images that you created. In the case of photographs, make sure you have permission from any identifiable subjects in the image.
- images provided by College Communications.
- images in the public domain.
- images for which you purchase usage rights, such as stock photography.
Some online resources of the latter two types:
- U.S. Government Photos and Graphics: not all images found through this search are in the public domain
- Photos and Prints from the Library of Congress
- Wikimedia Commons: each image file has a copyright notice which lists the restrictions associated with that file's usage license; look for images labeled public domain or secure permission as requested.
- iStockphoto: you can purchase Web-ready images from this site and use them under the standard license agreement; purchasing can be arranged through College Communications.
