PROGRAM FOCUS AND GOALS
This ten-week paid summer internship program focuses primarily on the value of mentorship. Based upon the belief that individual attention and mentorship can make an important difference in children’s lives, eight interns are selected to mentor children in the Manheim Central School District who have been deemed to be “at-risk” for school problems by their guidance counselors.
After two weeks of intense training, each intern is paired with three children and they spend six weeks working as tutors, mentors, and role models. Prior to the start of the summer camp session, the interns participate in a two-week training program to learn the essential tools needed to assist at-risk children. The final week of the 10-week internship is devoted to documenting the accomplishments of the students.
Each day, in the morning, the mentors conduct an enrichment program called "Kids Kamp." The students participate in a wide range of fun group activities aimed at developing skills such as social and emotional awareness, behavior management and problem solving. There is also an academic component to the morning program.
In the afternoons, the interns create a daily schedule for a recreation camp. During a standard week at camp, Mondays introduce the theme of the week and interns plan a number of different activities to reinforce the theme, Tuesdays and Thursdays are designated pool days, Wednesdays are special activity days, while every Friday the interns and children take fields trips away from Manheim.
