The Franklin & Marshall College Spring Dance Concert features a range of movements, explorations and dance styles in works choreographed and performed entirely by dance students.
Student choreographers have developed nine lyrical and modern works, performed by the F&M Dance Company, for the concert, April 23, 24 and 25, at 8 p.m., in the Schnader Theatre in the Roschel Performing Arts Center.
“It is a remarkable accomplishment of student creativity and collaboration,” said Lynn Brooks, the Arthur & Katherine Shadek Humanities Professor and chair of the Department of Theater, Dance & Film.
Among the featured works is a dance co-choreographed and performed by Tina Knipp ’09 and Ashley Lippolis ’09, the senior dance major who will receive the departmental award for choreography this year.
Lippolis described the dance, titled “Hinging on a Broken Melody,” as “an illogical modern duet between two quirky characters in an incredibly awkward relationship.
“Set to alarm clocks, door creaks and changing radio stations, the dance tickles, jars and confuses the audience, yet makes complete sense,” Lippolis said. “Audiences may see busy bag ladies or playful siblings, perhaps connected or disconnected to the sounds. A great deal is left to interpretation.”
Other choreographed works will include: “Invested Emotion” by Jeramie Kerr ’09; “a search; a discovery” by Heather van der Grinten ’09; “Shifting in Order to Adjust” by Emily Herchenroether ’10; “Kuntinkantan (Humility)” by Dorinda Foster ’09; “Quality Blend” by Dahlia Silberg ’09; “De-manufactured” by Victoria Lawrence ’10; “Glitch” by Allison Massof ’11; and “Ode to You” by Vanessa Lin Nie ’10.
Tickets are $5 for students, $7.50 for College employees and $10 for off-campus patrons and may be purchased online or by phone at (717) 358-4858.
Can’t get enough of student dance? The Choreography Showcase on Saturday, April 25, at 3 p.m., in the Schnader Theatre, will offer more works created by Franklin & Marshall students and performed by the Dance Company. Admission to the showcase is free.
