The Franklin & Marshall College community will gather for a Celebration of Life remembering Elana Patrice Stein '16 at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in New College House.

Stein, 20, passed away April 11 of cardiac arrest after being hospitalized at home in Potomac, Md., since early March with a severe infection. More than 100 F&M students, faculty and professional staff members, including President Dan Porterfield, attended her April 14 funeral at Congregation Beth El in Bethesda, Md.

A sociology major at F&M, Elana was a member of New College House and Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She also performed with the College dance company.

This week's on-campus service is being organized by Elana’s close friends in coordination with College Chaplain Rev. Susan Minasian. It will allow members of the F&M campus community and family and friends of the Stein family to further honor Elana's memory through music, readings, words of remembrance and celebration by students, and a butterfly release.

"Her parents and the students who knew her best want this to be uplifting," said Minasian, adding that a reception will follow in New College House featuring some of Elana's favorite foods.

The College continues to make counselors available through Counseling Services for those struggling with a sense of loss or seeking assistance in any way.

In an email to the College community last Tuesday, President Porterfield called Elana "a dynamic young woman who enjoyed every blessing except the gift of time." He also extended his thanks to all who have taken the time to reflect upon the needs of Elana's family for their "profound expressions of love," and said that among the best ways to make some kind of meaning out of Elana's untimely passing is "to treat each other with kindness and generosity."

"That simple mindful gesture can be a beautiful way to pay tribune to Elana," he wrote.
