Knitters Donate Handiwork to Hospital

Kim Herder ’10 does it before class and sometimes when she studies.

“It’s a good stress reliever,” she said.

Before last year, Herder thought knitting was something only grandmothers did, but she saw a YouTube how-to video and decided to pick up some knitting needles and give it a try.

Last week, the Franklin & Marshall Knitting Club donated its handiwork, 26 woolen baby caps and five baby blankets, to the Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital.

“We don’t get a lot of time to give back to the community,” Herder said. “This is something we can fit into our schedules and it is something tangible we can do for others.”

The club has 15 members who knit regularly, including students and members of the College community. You may see them at times, knitting together in the Bonchek House Common room with their cell phones on the table and backpacks strewn across the floor. Brightly colored yarn feeds into their busy hands as the knitting needles hook and pull a cap or blanket into shape.

It takes about four hours to knit a cap and more than three times that to create a blanket.

“Knowing that this small cap will help to keep a baby’s head warm gives me a good reason to donate my time,” said Yiqiu Fan ’11, who joined the club a few months ago.

“I do it while I’m waiting for class to start,” said Kathan Teepe ’10.

Students who see Teepe knitting often ask her why she’s doing it, she said.

“When I explain for whom we are making the caps, they become interested in knowing how they can help,” she said.

Herder said the nurses at the hospital were excited to receive the caps and the club already has set the goal to double its production in the fall.

“Now we’ll have to teach more people to knit,” Herder said.
