The partnership between Franklin & Marshall College and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lancaster County draws on an over 100-year history of Big Brothers Big Sisters as America's premier mentoring program model, as well as the local agency's 40 years of experience serving kids in Lancaster County. The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to serve Lancaster County children by offering opportunities for professionally supported One-to-One® mentoring relationships with qualified volunteers. Each relationship will assist the Little Brother or Sister to become a confident, competent, and caring individual.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent and low-income families, or households where a parent is incarcerated. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between volunteers (Bigs) and children (Littles). Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a system of ongoing evaluation and support which is proven by independent studies to help families by improving the odds that Littles will perform better in school, avoid violence and illegal activities, and have stronger relationships with their parents and others. Read on to learn how you can positively impact a child’s life!
Big Brothers Big Sisters coordinates a mentoring programs where student volunteers (Bigs) from Franklin & Marshall are paired with students at local elementary schools (Littles). Participants build friendships, share in fun activities, and work together towards continued academic success. Big Brothers Big Sisters has partnered with the School District of Lancaster to provide two After School Mentoring programs: one at Carter & MacRae Elementary and one at James Buchanan Elementary. Each program meets once per week for the duration of one academic year.
