Information Sessions

Students are required to attend information sessions to learn about trip details. Once committed to the program, students are required to attend all meetings. If you are unable to attend, email program leaders so you can arrange to find out what you missed during  the session.


  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required.
  • This trip is open to current first-years, sophomores, and juniors. 
  • Students who are abroad during the spring semester may be eligible to apply if they return to campus prior to May 2.

If you are abroad during the Spring semester contact during the fall semester to determine if you are able to meet program requirements. 

Documents to be Included with Your Application:

  • Faculty & Professional Staff Recommendation Form  This recommendation is to be completed online by the person who is recommending you.  YOU are responsible to contact your reference and provide them with the link to this form.
  • Passport valid through December, 2014

Scholarship Information:

Scholarships are available and are based on financial need. For more information about scholarships or Summer Travel awards, please contact Associate Dean , in the Office of International Programs.

Program Costs

*Program Cost: $4,100

Program cost is based on a minimum of 8 students and includes:

  • One F&M course credit
  • Two weeks accommodation on campus
  • Transportation to and from point of departure
  • Trip insurance
  • South Africa program fee, which includes
    • Lodging 
    • Two meals per day
    • All in-country transportation and security
    • Access to group cell phone
    • Limited internet access 

*Out-of-pocket expenses

Estimates per student for this program is $2,250 and include the following:

  • Airfare
  • food while training at F&M 
  • inoculations & medications required for the trip
  • personal expenses such as dining out, extra sight-seeing excursions, gifts and souvenirs.

Scholarships are based on financial need and do not include airfare unless financial need is determined. Indicate your interest in a scholarship on the application form.

  • rooms at F&M during training (not food)
  • inoculations necessary for the program (receipts required)
  • airfare

In the spirit of community solidarity and engaged learning, Ware Institute programs have a strict conduct policy and are drug free.

Course Requirements

Upon completion of all the requirements of the course, students will receive one F&M course credit.

  • Students are required to keep a written daily journal of your experiences in South Africa and must provide a copy of this journal no later than September 1, 2014 in order to receive course credit.
  • A post-trip meeting will be required at the beginning of the fall semester.

    NOTE: Your application won't be considered complete without a copy of your passport which must be valid through December 2014.

    A Faculty or F&M Professional Staff person must complete the FPS Recommendation form.

    FEBRUARY 14:
    • Application Deadline
    • $1,500 trip deposit due
    • copy of your passport is due.
    FEBRUARY 27: Next Steps to South Africa meeting.
    • This meeting will outline the next steps required to finalize your summer CBL course process, including Travel Clinic requirements.
    Time: 4:30 pm  Location TBA
    APRIL 4: Final steps meeting. 
    • Balance of payment due. 
    • Deadline for Travel Clinic. All students must complete a travel clinic two months in advance of the program's start date in order for inoculations and medications to be effective

    JUNE 9-JUNE 20: Program training at F&M 

    JUNE 22-JULY 18: Field work in South Africa.

    JULY 19: Return to U.S.

    SEPTEMBER 2014: Program evaluation Meeting
