Other Types of Temporary Work
Although the previously identified options are the best for most people, “plan B” should be some sort of work-related activity over the summer. Be creative – for instance by combining different options – to find the solution for your needs.
Volunteer Opportunities
At this stage in your career, future employers will not be concerned whether you were paid to do a certain job. Instead, they’ll focus on what you accomplished. Hence, pursuing a volunteer opportunity that will allow you to gain valuable experience may be a better option than an hourly job that will offer you little professional growth. Find the balance that’s right for you, even if it means having multiple part-time opportunities (e.g. some paid, others volunteer).
Temporary and Other Summer Jobs
As noted above, it’s better to have some sort of job rather than a blank space on your resume. Although temporary and hourly work may not relate to your long-term career goals, the skills you use on the job may be transferable to your future career. Thus, having a job that might not otherwise seem ideal can still help you market yourself for future opportunities.
• Temporary (or “Temp”) Assignments - One benefit of “temp” positions is that they are often set in professional environments, thus presenting learning and skill-building opportunities. Also, you may be assigned to well-known companies that will generate interest on your resume. Find more on temporary agencies in job search strategy section.
• Hourly Jobs - Of the types of these positions that are usually available (e.g. retail, etc.), try to select those where you can use the skills valued by employers in your field of interest (i.e., that you’ve identified through research). To obtain an hourly position, approach perspective employers directly, look for job announcements in local newspapers and on-line listings, and follow-up on word-of-mouth leads.
• On-Campus Jobs - Similar to hourly jobs, although they have the added benefit of possibly continuing during the school year.
