Career Profiles

When people think of Washington, D.C., they often think about politics, congressional staff members, and more.  Television shows, including The West Wing, perpetuate ideas about what like on "the Hill" is like.  Michelle Reinke '00 has created a very different path on Capitol Hill.

After graduating from F&M in 2000, Michelle moved to Washington, DC and took a position at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (the trade association representing the U.S. Cattle industry). While answering the constantly ringing phones, she sought out new projects and learned as much as she could about her organization. Michelle’s drive helped her move up quickly within the Government Affairs department. She began assisting the chief economist and developed an interest in international trade issues.

Michelle received several promotions, and was soon handling the regulatory and legislative aspects of NCBA’s trade priorities. She transitioned into a strictly legislative affairs role, where she interacted mostly with constituents on Capitol Hill. It was her job to represent and advocate the NCBA members’ views and policy positions to members of Congress, their staff, federal agencies, the media, and other business and agricultural groups. Her portfolio included international trade and tax issues.

Last fall, Michelle accepted a position as the Legislative Affairs Director for the National Restaurant Association.

Michelle is also active with the F&M Alumni Association, serving on the DC Chapter Council. She is part of a group of alumni working with the school to improve the internship opportunities for current students in the DC area.
