Study Abroad
Opportunities in History
History majors and minors are strongly encouraged to study abroad. Study abroad represents an unparalleled opportunity for students to enhance their undergraduate educational experience. Through visiting sites of historical interest, conducting primary research, interacting with non-U.S. Americans, and learning about topics beyond those offered at Franklin & Marshall, students encounter cultural and intellectual practices unlike their own. When they return to Franklin & Marshall, students enhance the quality of their own and others' education by sharing these perspectives.

Study Abroad Paths
Here you'll find several ways to fit off-campus study into your History major. Students interested in international and off-campus study should meet with their academic adviser or the History Department chairperson as early as possible. Typically, students will receive History credit at the 200- or 300-level for courses that they take abroad; these courses will often fulfill other distributional requirements in the Pre-modern, European, or World areas and credit transfer for these courses is very easily accomplished. Those students considering study abroad during their junior year are strongly urged to take the History Workshop (HIS 360) by the second semester of their sophomore year at the College.
First, you need to figure out how a semester or a full-year abroad will fit into your major. Click here to see different four-year sequences of courses that will enable you to take advantage of studying abroad while fulfilling all the requirements of a History Major.
When you're ready to begin planning your journey and applying to programs, attend a Starting Points meeting at the Office of International Programs.
