Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at F&M

A timeless major

Can you picture yourself digging at an archaeological site in Tuscany? Spending a semester walking in the footsteps of Socrates or Caesar? Uncovering secrets buried for millennia in ancient texts?

You can do all of this and more as a Franklin & Marshall Classics major.

With a breadth of study that is uncommon at liberal arts colleges, our department offers majors in Greek, Latin, and Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, which have prepared our graduates for careers in law, medicine, business, banking, insurance, government, and teaching. Many have been accepted into leading graduate programs in Classics and Archaeology in the United States and Great Britain.

Our faculty are active scholars with broad interests, who publish in the most prestigious national and international journals. They are also committed teachers dedicated to providing students with a first-rate major through classroom work, independent study, and study abroad. They regularly lead programs in the Mediterranean for Franklin & Marshall students.  The College is also a sponsor of the Poggio Colla Field School, where students dig at an Etruscan site near Florence.  In conjunction with a major exhibit of Etruscan art, artifacts excavated at the Poggio Colla site will be on display from January 25 - May 17, 2009, at thee Meadows Museum, Southern Methodist University. The department covers the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome, including their language and literary traditions, art and architecture, and histories.
