Greek at F&M

A tradition of language excellence.

At Franklin & Marshall College, the study of Ancient Greek can easily lead to a summer on a Greek island, digging in the foundations of ancient buildings side by side with renowned archaeologists.

Ancient languages have long been part of a thorough liberal arts education and they have had an important place at F&M since the College's founding in 1787.

Steadily growing enrollment in this major testify to the popularity of studying ancient languages in the Classics program. We offer four years of Greek, which routinely impresses admissions boards at competitive medical and law schools and makes memorization of legal and medical terminology much easier.

Our faculty include active scholars who incorporate their research into class and invite student research participation. Many of our majors participate in our popular study-abroad programs in Greece and Italy. In the summertime, students often collaborate on faculty research projects.

Students learn Ancient Greek, including prose, poetry and history, in the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of Buchanan House. Students come face to face with Plato, Homer, Sappho and Sophocles as they exercise their developing language skills in interpreting ancient texts in the original language.
