Sociology Colloquium
The Sociology Colloquium is co-sponsored by the Sociology Department, the Center for Liberal Arts and Society (CLAS) and the Ware College House.
For more information, please contact the Sociology Department at (717) 291-4035.
The Sociology Colloquium series presents guest scholars in sociology throughout the academic year, with a different theme each year. For 2008-2009, the theme was "Youth to Adult Transitions."
The Sociology students will be selecting a new topic for the 2009-2010 Colloquium in the near future.
Speakers for 2008-2009
- Dr. Pam Aronson, University of Michigan at Dearborn. Dr. Aronson's presentation was "The Markers and Meanings of Growing Up: Contemporary Young Women's Transition from Adolescence to Adulthood."
- Dr. Janel Benson '00, Colgate University. Dr. Benson spoke on "Adolescent Family Context and Adult Identity Formation."
- Dr. Frank Furstenberg, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Furstenberg spoke about his research in the sociology of the family, particularly on the changing nature of the transition to adulthood and on the long-term impacts of teenage parenthood.
How it works
The scholar's paper is pre-circulated for attendees to read in advance. At the event, the speaker presents for about twenty minutes, and then two discussants (one student and one faculty member), followed by an open discussion.
The colloquium is convened by Dr. Jerome Hodos.
