Chi Phi
Chi Phi was founded at Princeton University December 24, 1824. Thirty years later, in the winter of 1853-1854, John MacLean, Jr., found among the papers of his uncle, John MacLean, president of Princeton University, the old constitution, minute book, and ritual of the Chi Phi society of 1824, and, with these as his guide, he united with Charles Smith DeGraw and Custavus W. Mayer in reorganizing the old society at Princeton on what might have been called modern lines. The old motto and a great part of the ritual were retained. In the fall of 1854, Mayer organized a second chapter of this Chi Phi Society at Franklin & Marshall College which has proven to be the longest continuously running chapter of Chi Phi fraternity. Joseph Henry Dubbs, later a distinguished professor of history at his alma mater, was the first initiate
The Zeta chapter of the Chi Phi fraternity was established in 1854 by Alumni Brother Joseph H Dubbs. The current house that the brothers live in was built in 1929, shortly before the great depression, and is located on race avenue behind freshman dorms Bonchek and Ware. During the fall brothers hold a charity run for Autism and in the spring we hold a similar run to raise money for cancer in honor of the late father of one of our recent alumni Andrew Dunleavy. Currently the Chi Phi house is run by Exec board members: Glen Halperin, Chris van Roden, Will Austin, and Justin Moore who handle most of the daily activities involved with the constant upkeep of a fraternity house and organization. Brothers have the opportunity to live in the house which is very convenient since it is located right on campus, and there is a fraternity chef and meal plan that brings the actives who don't live in the house together for lunch and dinner five times a week. Currently active brothers are involved in organizations and sports teams on campus including the rugby team, squash team, hockey team, lacrosse team, and golf team. Chi Phi has an extensive alumni organization and active brothers always look forward to homecoming when their 80 year old house is flooded by Alumni of the past 6 decades who come back to relive their glory days at F and M and see the status their beloved Chi Phi.
