Phi Kappa Sigma

Phi Kappa Sigma was founded at Philadelphia August 16, 1850, by Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell, who developed the principles to be incorporated in its ritual and constitution, selected its name, and designed its badge and other insignia.  Associated with Mitchell in the enterprise were six other young students at the University of Pennsylvania: Alfred Victor du Pont, Charles Hare Hutchinson, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, James Bayard Hodge, Andrew Adams Ripka, John Thorn Stone, and Duane Williams.  These seven organized Alpha Chapter and so announced to their faculty and fellow students on October 19, 1850.  The Zeta chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma was established at Franklin & Marshall College in 1854.

Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, also known as the Phi Kaps, or Skull, celebrates 155 years of tradition in the fall of 2009.  Ever  since 1854, a its members have shared a strong sense of brotherhood, and the Phi Kaps have always been a great presence in the F&M community.  The Brotherhood is a well-rounded group that is active in many aspects of the College, claiming campus leaders and outstanding scholars as well as a huge presence in organizations such as One in Four, and also works toward philanthropic pursuits with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Habitat for Humanity.

Recently F&M's Zeta Chapter sponsored a Battle of the Bands benefit gig on-campus to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is in addition to the many other social events Phi Kappa Sigma holds for F&M students, such as the hugely popular Fire & Ice. Zeta Chapter enjoys the reputation of being considered "a model fraternity" by the college, one that serves as an example to other houses on campus. It is truly a standout organization, and any man who is a brother is very proud to bear that title.  Phi Kappa Sigma will never stop finding ways to make the college and the community a better place, and the brotherhood will continue having fun along the way.
