What is F&M Crew?
Franklin & Marshall Crew gives students with diverse histories and no previous training in the sport of rowing the opportunity to row and race at a competitive level against schools and rowing clubs from around the world. The team, run by its members, requires much individual determination, yet teaches, at the most profound levels, the meaning of cooperation. Through the strengthening of the physical body as well as the mind and soul, our mission is to provide all F&M students the chance to be an integral part of a competitive athletic organization. Previous experience is NOT necessary to join the team!
How much time does crew take up?
While the Men's Team is a club-varsity sport and the Women's Team a Varsity sport, their time committments a very similar. The team prefers to practice in the afternoon (after classes) and only practices in the morning on the water in order to avoid adverse weather conditions. The team usually practices 6 days a week in a combination of land and water based activities.
Does crew limit your participation in other activities?
While college students have a lot they can be involved in, it is enforced that academics always come first and athletics and other activities second. Despite the large time commitment, many team members develop efficient time management skills that allow them to be readily involved in other organizations on campus, in addition to holding jobs. The skills learned at this stage in life help shape and prepare students for post-graduate futures and jobs.
When does the team practice?
The team is currently holding winter training practices at the Alumni Sports and Fitness Center Monday - Friday in three one-hour shifts between 4:30 pm and 8:00 pm. These land workouts are utilized throughout the off-season and typically include erg training, lifting, and other cardiovascular exercises. Water practice times will be announced as the spring season approaches.
When is the crew season?
There are three seasons a year. The fall season starts in early September and continues through mid-November. The winter season is mainly a training and conditioning season that begins in mid-November and ends in mid-February. The main spring season begins in early March and continues into mid-May.
Where is practice?
The boathouse is located about 25 minutes from campus on the shores of the Susquehanna River. Indoor training takes place in the Alumni Sports and Fitness Center which is located on campus.
Are there weight classes?
Yes, the team offers a men and women’s lightweight option as well as a heavyweight men's and open-weight women’s class.
Is crew a varsity sport?
At Franklin and Marshall, Women's Rowing is a Varsity Sport while Men's Rowing maintains a club-varsity status. Both Men and Women benefit from the diverse experience offered by the entire coaching staff. They also share the new boathouse facilities.
Is prior rowing experience required?
Absolutely not. More than 80% of the team have never rowed before. Any student who is dedicated and wants to row can be competitive in the sport.
