New Housing Module Next Milestone for Project BOOST

A comprehensive project to streamline Franklin & Marshall's internal computing resources and information management will soon reach another milestone -- just in time to make the housing selection process easier for F&M students.

During the spring semester, students will make housing selections for the 2013-14 academic year through a new online system that will provide simple online access to residential and meal-plan information. The system will be accessible through Inside F&M, a Web portal that launched Dec. 14. The goal of the portal is to upgrade the way F&M delivers information about initiatives, news and operations to the campus community.

The housing system and Inside F&M are part of Project BOOST, F&M's Enterprise Resource Planning Project that launched in January 2012 to upgrade software systems managing student and academic information, human resources, finances and admission.

"Housing selection and administration will be more friendly for students and administrators with the new system," said Todd DeKay, associate dean of the College and director of disabilty services. DeKay worked closely with Lori Foust, College residential coordinator, to develop the housing system in conjunction with the Project BOOST team. "All information relating to student housing will be easier to access and more integrated."

During the housing lottery -- which takes place each spring -- the new system will include graphics with floor plans of residential buildings, giving students a more complete picture of their housing options. However, most aspects of housing selection will remain similar to the procedures of recent years.

DeKay said the new system will eliminate paperwork and save time when students make changes to their housing or meal plans.

"If a student changes his or her meal plan, people in several offices on campus currently make the change in different databases, and that takes time," DeKay said. "In the new system, the student will be able to view the changes online the next day."
