F&M requires fraternities and sororities to have Chapter Advisors & Faculty/Campus Advisors.
F&M expects that advisors will take an active role in the organization. The nature and style of that role are left to the determination of the organization and its advisor. The role of the Chapter Advisor is to guide, advise, and support the chapter and its officers and monitor their progress. A chapter may choose to have one Chapter Advisor or a team of advisors.
The Chapter Advisor needs to be willing to devote significant time to the chapter, skilled in organizational and leadership development, and proficient in their inter/national organization's policies and their interpretation.
Mentoring and Coaching College-age young adults:
College-age young adults are in a critical period. Research and neuroscience tell us that vital areas are still developing and Brain Development is an important factor in how we mentoring and coaching this developmental range.
Fraternity and Sorority chapters are complex organizations that require different types of strategies based on the stage of organizational development.
Franklin & Marshall's Hazing Policy:
Hazing is a violation of College policy and Pennsylvania state law. Hazing includes but is not limited to behaviors occurring on or off campus that are physical, emotional, or psychologically humiliating or abusive, or endanger the health or safety of an individual or selected group of individuals as part of the process of gaining entrance or acceptance into an established group, team, or organization. Any activity as described in this definition upon which the initiation or admission into, or affiliation with, or continued membership in an organization is directly or indirectly conditioned shall be presumed to be “forced” activity, the willingness of an individual to participate in such activity notwithstanding.
Hazing includes but is not limited to subjecting an individual to extreme mental stress or encouraging or requiring willful destruction or removal of public or private property for the purpose of initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition of continued membership in any organization. The term “hazing” shall also include, but not be limited to, any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug or other substance, or any other forced physical activity which could adversely affect the physical health and safety of the individual, and includes activities subjecting persons to extreme mental stress, including sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct which could result in extreme embarrassment, or any other forced activity which could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual.
