How is Franklin & Marshall College focused on student health and wellness?

As part of its efforts to develop a stronger and more comprehensive approach to student health and wellness, Franklin & Marshall College has partnered with LG Health to provide enhanced health and wellness services to F&M students.

The LG Health has an extensive network of inpatient and outpatient care facilities including Lancaster General Hospital, which is located less than a mile from campus. For the past several years, it has been ranked among the top 3 percent of the nation's hospitals in U.S. News and World Report. Lancaster General Health Physicians group includes nearly 300 area family doctors and specialists. LG Health offers additional benefits for students, including access to their own health information through individualized online portals, increased access to specialists, and new or expanded programs in wellness, nutrition and women's health.

What are the location and hours?

The new Franklin & Marshall Student Wellness Center is located in College Square on Harrisburg Avenue. This expanded facility, next to the Alumni Sports and Fitness Center, provides enhanced outpatient medical care, as well as comprehensive wellness services, including counseling and preventive health options. Hours of service are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

How do I make an appointment to be seen at counseling services?

 If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call or come in to Counseling Services and the first available counselor will see you. Otherwise, please make an appointment, and we will do our best to schedule you as soon as possible, typically within a week. Please visit the Contact Us page for more information. 

How is the Student Wellness Center staffed?

The Student Wellness Center is staffed by a full-time LG Health medical director, physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed psychologists, and licensed professional counselors.

How are health records are kept?

Each student has one record that is shared between health services and counseling services. It also is part of LG Health's electronic medical record system. Information in each student's record is accessible to all the Student Wellness Center providers and any providers a student may see at other LG Health facilities.

What should I do if I need medical assistance after the Student Wellness Center is closed?

For emergencies, call 911 and then Public Safety at 717-358-3939.

For after hours counseling emergency care, students should call 717-544-9051 and press "0." They will be connected with a 24/7 on-call counselor.  Additionally, students may call Lancaster County Crisis Intervention at 717-394-2631.

Students seeking medical attention while the Student Wellness Center is closed have several options, depending on the severity of their condition. The first – in minor cases – is to call 717-544-9051 and leave a message. A nurse will respond promptly the next morning. They also may ask their Hall Advisor for help or call the Department of Public Safety, 717-358-3939, if more urgent assistance is needed.

Students may seek care at LG Health Urgent Care at 2118 Spring Valley Rd. (west of Park City Mall, just off Route 30 and Rohrerstown Rd.) in Lancaster. Hours: 
Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday – Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 
Call 717-544-0150.  Students can receive a taxi voucher from the Department of Public Safety for transport to the Urgent Care after hours . Students are responsible for the cost of care provided at LG Health Urgent Care (refer also to SHIP and Complementary Care benefits).

What are the health insurance options at F&M?

In response to the Affortable Care Act, F&M has developed three unique options for students to choose from:  Comprehensive Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP); Complementary Care; or students' personal health insurance.  

What are the costs I might incur at Health Services?

  • Privately insured students: For students choosing not to purchase the SHIP or the Complementary Care program, it is important to note that their personal insurance will be billed for any services or supplies provided at the Student Wellness Center, just as if services were obtained at a provider in the student's home community. The Health Services Fee will cover visit co-payments not covered by your insurance for care received at the Student Wellness Center, but it will not cover deductibles, co-insurance or other costs not covered by your insurance.   • Students covered by SHIP or Complementary Care: Both the SHIP and Complementary Care includes coverage for charges incurred at the F&M Student Wellness Center. This means students covered by either plan will not pay for medical visits, group counseling, up to seven individual counseling visits, laboratory services (not including reference laboratory tests), medical supplies and medications, and preventive care services mandated by the Affordable Care Act, and other services and supplies for treatment of illness or injury. Does Complementary Care cover urgent care services?

Students covered by Complementary Care receive one doctor visit including, imaging, lab and procedures, each semester at no cost when care is received at LG Health Urgent Care -Lancaster.

What are the costs I might incur at Counseling Services?

Regardless of insurance status, all students receive one complementary consultation and three counseling sessions. During the initial intake session, the needs of each student will be evaluated and a plan of care will be established. There is no charge for services provided in response to a mental-health emergency. 

  • Privately insured students: For students choosing not to purchase the SHIP or the Complementary Care program, after the initial complementary consultation and three free sessions, the student's personal insurance will be billed for individual counseling sessions just as if services were obtained at a counseling provider in the student's home community. This also applies to the services of the psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner for psychiatric evaluations and medication management. The Health Services Fee will cover individual counseling services co-payments not covered by your insurance for care received at the Student Wellness Center, but it will not cover deductibles, co-insurance or other costs not covered by your insurance.   • Students covered by SHIP or Complementary Care: Both the SHIP and Complementary Care  coverage includes group counseling and up to seven individual counseling visits. Any additional sessions will be billed to the SHIP or the student's personal health insurance. The Health Services Fee will cover visit co-payments not covered by your insurance for care received at Lancaster General Health at F&M Student Wellness Center, but it will not cover deductibles, co-insurance or other costs not covered by your insurance. What are the confidentiality policies for the Student Wellness Center?

LG Health is committed to protecting the confidentiality of your information and records.  Several laws and LG Health policies protect the confidentiality of the information shared with Counseling Services staff.  Your counseling records and any information you provide to your counselor will not be used or disclosed except as required or permitted by law, in accordance with the Notice of Privacy Practices and LG Health policies (see link below).  

Your information may be disclosed in the following circumstances: (i) for ongoing treatment and continuity of care; (ii) when required by court order; (iii) when required to report possible abuse; or (iv) when there is reason to believe that you are a danger to yourself or others.  Any use or disclosure of your information will be in accordance with state and federal laws, LG Health’s Notice of Privacy Practice, and LG Health policies.
