About Philosophy

Our Program and Courses

Philosophy is a major and minor at F&M. You’ll deep-dive and analyze seemingly everyday questions, examine the historical traditions of philosophy, and explore a broad range of contemporary philosophical issues and topics — all while cultivating skills in critical thinking and philosophical argument. All philosophy majors share a common core of coursework and complete the major by exploring current work in philosophy, during which leading scholars in the field will visit and share their current research.

Alumni Spotlight

“What I loved about the idea of the liberal arts was just going to school and being able to figure it out.”

For independent film producer Jesse Hope ’13, the road to the Sundance Film Festival began at F&M. As a philosophy major and film minor, he found the two disciplines to be naturally entwined.

“Philosophy was complementary to filmmaking in a lot of ways,” Hope said. “The little short films I made were trying to explore some connection between my studies in philosophy and my studies in film.”

Hope credits F&M for giving him space to explore.

“At that point in my life, the reason I was in school was to challenge myself and try to understand the world and my experience,” he said. “What I loved about the idea of the liberal arts was just going to school and being able to figure it out.”

Student Spotlight

“F&M’s commitment to experiential learning has allowed me to explore my interests and prepare for my future in ways I never imagined.”

At Franklin & Marshall, we want you to gain hands-on experience and convert theory into practice — not just read about it in a textbook. For William Gerber ’26, this meant interning for the President Judge of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas, an experience that reinforced his decision to pursue a future in law.

“F&M’s commitment to experiential learning through internships like this has allowed me to explore my interests and prepare for my future in ways I never imagined,” he said.

Gerber, a philosophy minor, said the most fascinating aspect of his experience was the insights he received from the judges themselves behind the scenes.

“Whether it be after they give their rulings, or in the middle of a settlement conference where the judge is facilitating negotiations between opposing counsels and is privy to information that each side is not aware of, getting to hear their thoughts and reasoning before and after proceedings has deepened my understanding of how legal decisions are made,” he said. “It’s one thing to learn about judicial reasoning in the classroom, but another entirely to see it applied in real time and in real cases.”

“Those opportunities allowed me to discover a calling within myself that I don't think I would have discovered otherwise, and it completely altered my course of action going forward,” McBride, a philosophy and government double major said. “I will never be able to put into words how well F&M prepared me to tackle postgraduate study in the U.K.”
