Oceans and Coasts

This course will examine the physical properties and dynamics of the oceans, and how we as humans interact with, exploit, and feel about the sea. We will use examples from different disciplines within and outside the natural sciences to illustrate our dependence on the oceans, and our impacts on both its living and non-living components. We will begin by looking at water and what makes it special. Then we will look at the history of the study of the ocean and how this is intertwined with the history of mankind on Earth. We will look at the coasts, their dynamics and our relationship with the ocean, which begins at the coast. We will study the global ocean and how it moves and how we might be changing it.
