Laser Tag
About 75 Bonchekers started off the Spring semester with a trip to play laser tag on Saturday, Jan. 18. Thanks to Congress for organizing the trip and subsidizing the tickets. Photos by Maya McNeal.

  • The Catastrophic Relief Alliance made an UnCommon Hour presentation on Jan. 28 about its recent trip to New Orleans. Kelsey Kreyche '16 (center) organized the event. Librarian and CRA jefe Andy Gulati (second from right) presented.  Bruce Campbell-Janz (right), Executive Director, Mennonite Central Committee-East Coast, also gave a presentation on the work of that relief group. A Southern buffet supper was served.

  • Prof. Monica Cable, Director of Post-graduate Fellowships and Scholarships, addressed Bonchekers who made the Honor Roll for the Fall semester during our biannual Scholars Reception on Jan. 28. She focused on postgraduate opportunities available for our students.

  • For Bonchek House's Third Annual Presentation on Contemporary Issues, Pennsylvania Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Shogan, P’15, spoke on Privacy Rights in the Digital Age, on Jan. 27.

  • Super Bowl Sunday!
  • Bonchek House Congress sponsored its annual Super Bowl Party on Feb. 2, showing the action on the big screen of the Great Room. Snacks distracted everyone from the fact that the game was no contest.

Bonchek winter olympics
Bonchek had its own winter olympics with an impromptu snow sculpture contest and snowball fight on Feb. 3. 1st prize went to The Thinker, by John and Abel, due to its thoughtful pose, elegant form, and detail. Godzilla, the Grand Piano, and the Bonchek Crest were also well crafted. Prizes were won by all!

  • On Feb. 4, we had a luncheon with some of the 31 Bonchekers who studied abroad during the Fall, in Chile, Belgium, France, Italy, Australia, Spain, England. We were joined by Sue Mennicke and Rachel Helwig from International Programs.

  • After the annual Conrad Nelson art lecture by David Saladik on Feb. 6, about 35 faculty, staff, guests, and Bonchek students had a buffet dinner with conversation in our Great Room. Co-sponsored by the Art Department.

  • About a dozen Bonchekers met on Feb. 11 and 25 to share lunch and discuss a few chapters from David Walbert's Garden Spot: Lancaster County, the Old Order Amish, and the Selling of Rural America.

  • Sixteen of us had dinner at a local Amish farm on Feb. 28. Besides the hearty foodof chicken pot pie, poatoes, peas, apple sauce, and banana cream pie, we were able to ask questions about the lifestyle of our Lancaster neighbors.

  • This last lonely fassnachts was one of three dozen eaten by Bonchekers as Pennsylvania Dutch pantries were cleared of lard for Fat Tuesday, March 4, the beginning of Lent.

One World, One Dance
On March 4, Ariana Solodar-Wincele gave a slide show of her trip to Guinea, Africa, over semester break. She and Janet Peck performed African dances, the African drumming ensemble led by Tammi Hessen, and we all enjoyed food from Rafiki's deli. It was our loudest (and one of our best) UnCommon Hours!

  • Common Hour spealer Valerie Weaver-Zercher had dinner with us in Bonchek House on March 6 to discuss her book, The Thrill of the Chaste, about the genre of Amish romance novels.

  • After 17 years working in South Ben Residence Hall and Bonchek House, Angel is retiring. We honored him with a luncheon on March 18 attended by students and staff. His cheerfulness, hard work, and tranquiity will be missed.

  • OSPGD staff members Joe Gebbie, Katie Schellenger, and Stephanie Kessler joined us for bagel breakfast on March 7 to informally discuss internships and jobs with our students.

Sternberg sendoff
Prof. Sternberg ends his four-year tenure as don of Bonchek House this summer. In his honor, students Cameron Koob, Esther Kim, Jenny Georgieva, Otto Magee, Jack Mizell, and Ricard Camuccio presented an open-mic evening on March 27, with refreshments for all.

  • Juniors Kelsey Kreyche and Ameesh Upadhyay (left) joined seniors Darielle Christman and Matt Klimuszka for the four meetings of the Junto Society, modeled after Ben Franklin's Junto, with the last on March 30.

  • Prof. Carol Davis and members of the cast of Angels in America, Part I, interpeted a couple of scenes and talked about the meanings of the play for them during a lively UnCommon Hour on April 1 (no fooling).

  • 50-some Bonchek House seniors met in Iron Hill on April 3 for a pre-graduation reunion. How cool to see hall mates together again.

  • For the biannual Community Outreach Dinner on April 6, we hosted over 100 guests from local shelters for dinner, with food donated via Bonchekers' meal swipes. Anne Dolan is courted by The Chessmen during entertainment.

  • A number of Bonchekers, including Linh Tranh, Molly Carney, Eli Schneck, Zach Adams, and Tony Deng, presented their research at the biannual research fair on April 11.

Classy Ball
Several hundred students celebrated the end of the academic year on April 12 at the Bonchek-sponsored Classy Ball, organized and paid for by the student Congress.  Tunes were spun by Tayzhaun and Geovani.

  • At a year-end reception on April 18, our annual awards for service to Bonchek House were presented to: faculty member Bryan Stinchfield (BOS); students Gina DiBenedetto (not pictured, for her service to Bonchek House Congress), Darielle Christman and Margi Shah (Community Outreach Dinner organizers); and staff member Stephanie Kessler (OSPGD).
