There are two General Chemistry lab/lecture areas and one Organic Chemistry lab/lecture area. The lecture area is in the front of each lab and is used in the morning by each section for a total of three hours per week. Lab courses have a four-hour laboratory in which the principles of synthesis, separation, and identification are taught.
Approximately 240 students enroll in Chem 111 and these students are divided into ten sections, each taught by a faculty member. Thus, each section contains 20 to 26 students in both lecture and lab.
The department has a strong commitment to teaching and has experimented with diverse methodologies that range from guided inquiry to the use of electronic texts.
