Award-winning playwright Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" will be performed Thursday, Feb. 14 at Franklin & Marshall College.
The student-run production is based on Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women and is being performed in conjunction with V-Day, a global movement to raise awareness of violence against women and girls.
Two performances will take place at 7 p.m and 10 p.m in the college's Roschel Performing Arts Center. Admission is $5 for students and $10 for off-campus patrons. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 358-4858 or visiting the online box office at http://tdf.fandm.edu/boxoffice/. Tickets will also be available in the Steinman College Center beginning Feb. 7. Proceeds will go to Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County, Milagro House, and the YWCA Sexual Assault Prevention and Counseling Center.
Ensler's charity, V-Day, was named one of Worth magazine's "100 Best Charities" in 2001 and celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2008. This global movement continues to support the worldwide crusade against violence through benefit productions of "The Vagina Monologues." In 2007, more than 3000 V-Day events took place in the U.S. and around the world. To date, V-Day has raised more than $50 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it; crafted international educational, media, and PSA campaigns; launched the Karama program in the Middle East; reopened shelters; and funded over 5000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt, and Iraq. The 'V' in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina. www.vday.org
The V-Day College Campaign strives to empower women to find their collective voices and demand an end to the epidemic levels of violence and abuse on their campuses, in their communities and around the world. Through benefit productions of "The Vagina Monologues" on or around V-Day (February 14), they raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls. The proceeds from these events are donated directly to local organizations in the community that are working to stop this violence.
Co-sponsors of V-Day include The Women's Center, The Center for Liberal Arts & Society, The Ware Institute, Department of Theater, Dance & Film, International Studies Program, Office of Health Education & Wellness, Office of the Provost, Women & Gender Studies Program, and The College Houses.
