About Helen Stahr Hartman

Helen Stahr Hartman (1873-1957) was the daughter of John Summers Stahr, fourth president of Franklin & Marshall College. After graduating from Wellesley College in 1894, she taught for three years at Lancaster High School. In 1897 she began Miss Stahr’s School for Girls (later renamed Shippen School, and now Lancaster Country Day School). After marrying Edwin Hartman in 1905, she assisted with running the Franklin and Marshall Academy (FMA) for almost 40 years. FMA was a boy’s preparatory school affiliated with the College from 1872 to 1943.

The Helen Stahr Hartman award is presented to alumnae who graduated at least 10 years ago and who have distinguished themselves in their fields of endeavor, been of service to other women by serving as role models and/or advanced causes central to women’s successes in life, and reflected positively on the College through their character and accomplishments.

Helen Stahr Hartman Young Alumnae Award

The Helen Stahr Hartman Young Alumnae award is presented to alumnae who have graduated within the past 10 years and have set themselves on trajectories of distinguished accomplishments in their fields, been of service to other women as role models, advanced causes central to women’s successes in life, and reflected positively on the College through their character and accomplishments.
