Interdisciplinary Approaches

Environmental Science Major

Environment Science uses an interdisciplinary approach to investigate environmental issues. With our cutting-edge field, laboratory and computing equipment, students learn to evaluate and solve environmental problems.  A broad selection of courses prepare students to understand environmental issues within a societal context. Contacts with local, state, and national environmental professionals enhance the program.

This major features:

  • A field-based program, with access to local streams, wetlands, and forests
  • Capstone environmental seminar in conjunction with Environmental Studies
  • Transfer credit available for summer field courses

  • Student use of sophisticated scientific instrumentation

Environmental Studies Major

This major incorporates the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to examine how humans interact with, and impact, the environment around them. Students focus on complex environmental issues like global warming, alternative energy sources, wilderness protection, and natural resource. Contacts with local, state, and national environmental professionals enhance the program.

This major features:

  • Based in a department nationally recognized for its excellence
  • Advised by an interdisciplinary faculty, committee
  • A broad program that draws on the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences
  • Small classes
  • Capstone environmental seminar in conjunction with Environmental Science
  • Opportunities for study abroad
  • Independent study projects and internships (including EPA) for interested students
  • Access to comprehensive databases in our own computer labs

 

Geosciences Major

Geosciences emphasizes the dynamic processes that shape our planet, looking at the minerals and rocks that comprise it and the interdisciplinary study of the Earth’s surface and interior.

This major features:

  • A proven track record, consistently ranking among the best undergraduate programs in the country
  • Small classes, typically 12 students or less
  • A flexible program, with four required core courses and a selection of the remainder
  • A field-based program, with access to diverse local geology, including the Appalachian Mountains
  • Transfer credit for a required summer field course
  • Extracurricular field trips to exotic locations
