Particle Analysis Laboratory

Thanks to generous funding from the National Science Foundation the Particle Analysis Laboratory offers Earth and Environment students and faculty execeptiional opportunities to study the size distribution of particles and other characteristics of sediments and soils.

  • Laser Diffraction

  •  The Micromeritics Saturn 5200 DigiSizer uses a laser beam to measure sediment particle size.

  • Sedigraph

  •  The Micromeritics Sedigraph II uses  an X-ray beam and Stokes Law to measure sediment size.

 A Frantz Isodynamic Magnetic Separator is available to isolate particles based on magnetic properties.

A Quantachrome Pentapycnometer can be used to accurately measures the volume of solids.

The laboratory also includes a seed identification station and a large format IEC centrifuge.
