Past & Upcoming Events

Below is a list of scheduled upcoming events. These events include speakers, lunches, and other scheduled programs designed to help F&M's faculty and professional staff better familiarize themselves with what a faculty center is, what it does, and what an F&M faculty center could possibly be. Attending these events are your best opportunities to voice your opinion. We want to hear what everyone in the F&M community has to say and we want to see everyone at these events. Remember, what an F&M faculty center looks like is up to you!

Scheduled Events

Tuesday, February 5:  The Faculty Center at F&M:  An Emerging Vision.
4 – 6 PM;  Academy Room, Shadek-Fackenthal Library.

At this first-ever Happy Hour LoL (HaH/LoL?), the Faculty Centers group will preview their findings and recommendations for a Faculty Center at F&M. Results from the survey and discussions held during the fall will be presented, and together we will explore the ways in which this initiative dovetails with other issues on the faculty’s agenda. For example, at the Governance Task Force luncheon this week, it was noted that a properly configured Faculty Center could relieve some pressure on the Provost’s Office by taking on responsibility for some of the “formative” faculty development activities. Join us for snacks and drinks as we discuss what our Faculty Center might be…

Past Events

Kick-Off Event: On September 8, the Faculty Centers Advisory (FCA) hosted our Kick-Off Event in the Brooks Commons. We presented several different faculty center models and fielded questions and comments from the faculty and professional staff in attendance. We collected a lot of valuable feedback via the sticky notes attendees stuck to our posters. It was an excellent first step, one that we hope provides this project with some great momentum going forward.

Susan Pliner Talk: Susan Pliner, of Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, came to campus on September 11 to discuss the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). Her center is an excellent example of a well-run combined model, where student and faculty services are combined and are managed by one entity rather than two. Her insight gave the FCA an excellent look into the resources required to run such a center.

Adrienne Christiansen Talk: On Friday, October 12, at noon, Adrienne Christiansen of Macalester College in Minnesota, will be coming to discuss the Center for Scholarship and Teaching (CST). A primarily faculty oriented center, the CST will provide an interesting contrast to Hobart & William Smith's combined model, which places emphasis on serving both students and faculty jointly. The talk will take place in Shadek-Fackenthal library's Academy Room.

Lunch on Learning: On Wednesday, October 17, be sure to come to F&M's Lunch on Learning for further discussion about what F&M's faculty center should look like. We will present a couple different models and we will be looking for feedback from those in attendance. You will also get a chance to see many of the reactions we collected from the sticky notes at our Kick-Off Event on September 8.

Louis Newman Talk: On Tuesday, October 30, Louis Newman of Carleton College in Minnesota, will be on campus to discuss the Learning and Teaching Center (LTC). The LTC, like Macalester's CST, is more faculty-focused than Hobart's combined model. The talk will run from noon to 1 p.m. and will be held in Booth Ferris South. Lunch will be served. THIS EVENT WAS CANCELED DUE TO HURRICANE SANDY. IT WILL NOT BE RESCHEDULED. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.

Proto-Model Lunch: You are warmly invited to attend the final Faculty Centers Project Event, a luncheon, Monday, November 12th in the Academy Room at Shadeck-Fackenthal Library from 12-1:15.  At this event we will discuss a "proto"-model (see links below) of a center for F&M, based on the information we have gathered and on the feedback we have received from you at our events this fall. After briefly describing the proto-model, we will engage in discussion and further conversation.

A formal survey referring to the proto-model will be released shortly after this event.  Note that you need not attend the event to respond to the survey. We hope to get maximum participation in the survey.
