Biology Teaching Assistant (TA):  A teaching assistant (TA) assists students and the professor during weekly laboratory for biology courses. A TA reviews the lab manual each week, arrives early to set up and check equipment, aids students with computer and equipment use, and facilitates discussion to help students in designing group projects. A TA may occasionally present results or describe methods for analysis to the class or may meet outside of the regular lab time to review equipment use. A student who has excelled in the course may be selected by instructors to be a TA the following year due to the special skills required for the position.

 

Laboratory Preparation Assistant:  The Department of Biology is seeking two to three F&M students for the position of laboratory preparation assistant beginning this fall semester.  The first day of fall semester employment is August 28, 2011; this position begins on August 29, 2011.  We need to fill the following slots daily: 8:00 AM–12:00 PM (2-3 hours) and 1:00 – 4:00 PM (2-3 hours), with some flexibility in exact times/days.  Duties and skills required include:  teaching laboratory preparation (setting up lab materials, supplies, reagents, and solutions; general lab maintenance), animal care, greenhouse support (planting, watering, cleaning & general maintenance), and running errands on campus.  This position requires regular attendance, reliability, punctuality, initiative, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.  This position pays $7.25/hour and is limited to no more than 10 hours/week/student. Biology Office Assistant:  The Biology Department Office employs office assistants and advanced office assistants.  Office Assistants in the Biology Department will primarily assist the academic coordinator and faculty with routine tasks.  Advanced Office assistants with one or more years of experience in the office will be trained to assist with special projects.  Excellent computer skills, confidentiality, reliability, punctuality, and congeniality are required.  General duties and skills include: answering telephone, redirecting calls, answering walk-in inquires, data entry (developing and maintaining assigned projects on the computer), copying, filing, mail pick up, and running other errands on campus; experience in Word and Excel a must.  This position also requires regular attendance, initiative, organizational skills, ability to work independently, and professionalism (in dress and in interactions on the telephone and in person).  Pay is standard at $7.25/hour and is limited to 10 hours/week, Monday-Friday (hours to be determined and agreed upon between 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.).  This position will be filled according to the needs and timetable of the department.  Please contact .
