Curatorial Assistant/Graphics Intern: Student with art, design and graphics experience, needed to assist and report to the Curator of Exhibitions with planning and publicizing exhibitions, including developing graphics for each exhibition which may include postcards, posters and catalogs; working with Curator to interview and to photograph artists and their work; to film and photograph opening receptions and to edit films for use on Museum website and other media; to assist with editing exhibition information for web. The Graphics intern will work with Curator to design postcards and publicity pieces for each exhibition and program at the Museum using Adobe Photoshop, the C3 suite of graphic products including InDesign, iMovie, etc., and will work with printer to finalize publicity pieces and prepare them for printing; Intern will interact with Communications Department regarding design and posters, etc.; accompany Curator on some local studio visits to take photographs and to learn about the work of the artist. First Friday attendance is essential.
Work associated with this position – mail, e-mail, mailed materials, etc. Intern must be able to converse on the phone and by email with printers, communications staff, and artists and exhibitors.
Curatorial Office Assistant: The Phillips Museum of Art is looking for a student interested in gaining valuable job experience in office management or nonprofit administration. The business administrator will be responsible for assisting the Curator in the day-to-day administrative operations of the museum including:
Maintain office files in a neat organized manner
Organize and maintain Museum Library
Recommend new time/cost saving office procedures
Draft signage, letters, and other correspondence as needed
Disseminate Exhibition Posters and information across campus.
Reserve museum galleries and other on-campus rooms for exhibitions, receptions and special events using the college reservation system
Request space and equipment setup for special events using the college reservation system
Track museum reservations
Make guesthouse, hotel and restaurant reservations for visiting artists and lecturers
Coordinate catering for exhibition openings and programs
Maintain Museum conference area, organizing exhibition records including posters, postcards, catalogs, and shelves in the conference area.
The business administrator will be expected to keep busy and look for opportunities to help the staff or improve office efficiency without constant staff direction. Museum Docent: Art/Art History students needed in The Phillips Museum of Art to attend to visitors to the Museum; to monitor attendance and visitors with the purpose of providing information about the exhibitions, the history of the Museum, the technical appreciation of the exhibitions; to safeguard the collections; to provide assistance to visitors and to the Museum staff; to assist the Front Desk Administrator with staffing needs in galleries; to engage visitors in viewing, understanding and interpreting the exhibitions; to provide leadership and initiative when staff are not available.
Essential Duties: Familiarize him/herself with the Museum, its history, its placement on campus; become knowledgeable of current exhibitions, artists or work and techniques represented in the exhibition; to answer visitor questions and to provide guidance and to safeguard the galleries during visitor hours and on weekends. To participate in peer-to-peer docenting at least twice each semester. To be watchful and to report unusual or questionable conduct to museum staff and/or to Public Safety. To arrive on time and to leave on time, never leaving the galleries unattended while the museum is open to the public; to open and to close each gallery at regularly scheduled hours during the week and on weekends. To attend and to assist with monthly First Friday activities including food set ups and clean up.
Special Skills required in order to perform this job: Ability and desire to converse with visitors; some knowledge of art and art history; museum experience is a plus, but keen interest and the desire to learn about Museum vocations and art is preferred over all.
Museum Front Desk Administrator: An opportunity for a student interested in Museum or Non-profit Administration: The Front Desk Administrator is to be the first Museum Staff met by visitors to the Museum; to cordially and attentively greet all visitors; to register attendance and to attend to all visitors with the purpose of providing information about the exhibitions, the history of the Museum, the technical appreciation of the exhibitions; to safeguard the collections; to provide assistance to visitors; to answer all incoming calls, fielding calls to staff and taking messages when required; to facilitate sales of catalogs and other museum items; to provide leadership and initiative when staff are not available.
Essential Duties: To greet and orient all visitors, asking them to register; answer the front desk telephone, field phone calls and/or take messages; give driving directions to callers who request them; familiarize him/herself with the Museum, its history, its placement on campus; become knowledgeable of current exhibitions, artists or work and techniques represented in the exhibition; to answer visitor questions and to provide guidance and to safeguard the galleries during visitor hours and on weekends; answer questions about museum store items and to facilitiate sales of catalogs and other items. The Front Desk Administrator will be responsible to assure that all galleries are covered, monitoring Docent attendance including calls to student Docents, and will assist with recording attendance and enering visitor information into a spreadsheet for use in mailing of Museum notices. The Front Desk Administrator must be watchful and report unusual or questionable conduct to museum staff and/or to Public Safety. To arrive on time and to leave on time, never leaving the galleries unattended while the museum is open to the public; to open and to close each gallery at regularly scheduled hours during the week and on weekend. - assisting with the handling of art arriving and leaving the museum.
-works with museum staff to ensure security policies and handling procedures are followed with regard to all art movements.
- The applicant must be willing to lift objects up to 75lbs, a willingness to learn how to use tools, and be very detail oriented.
