IRIS is a grant information clearinghouse run by the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign. Their website offers three services:

  • IRIS Database: a searchable database of over 8,000 federal and foundation-based grant opportunities in all fields. Most grant records contain weblinks to the sponsor's own website.
  • IRIS Alert: a customizable search profile tailored to individual users' needs. When a grant matching the user's interests is announced, that user is notified via e-mail or online.
  •  IRIS Expertise Service: a place for researchers to post their curriculum vitae online so that other institutions and grantmakers can view them. The online CVs can also be used with electronic grant submissions.

The Foundation Center is an independent clearinghouse for grant information. Set up in 1956, the Foundation Center concentrates solely on foundations offering grants, both from private and corporate foundations. Among the site's features are a comprehensive and up-to-date database on private and corporate giving, tutorials on seeking grants and writing proposals, and the Philanthropy News Digest, a weekly news abstract about philanthropic activities.

Franklin & Marshall maintains a subscription to the Foundation Directory Online, a nearly comprehensive database of private foundation funders in the United States.  Please contact Ryan Sauder () if you'd like assistance in running a search.  Alternatively, the Duke Street Business Center (http://www.lancaster.lib.pa.us/lcl/cwp/view.asp?A=1152&Q=464082) at the Lancaster Public Library has a subscription to the Foundation Directory Online that is free for use by library patrons.
