Influenza 2013

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus. It can cause mild to severe illness. It is different from a cold. The flu usually starts suddenly and people with the flu often have some or all othe the following symptoms:

  • fever >100 F
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • body aches
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • children may have vomiting and diarrhea

Most people recover in a few days to less than two weeks.

Stopping the Spread

  • Best way to protect against the flu is to get immunized - call your family doctor or local pharmacy for availability
  • Avoid close contact with sick people
  • When you cough or sneeze cover your nose and mouth with tissue or direct the cough or sneeze into your elbow
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Hands carry many germs.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. 
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

About Our Medical Director

Dr. Myers graduated from Lehigh University with a BS in Biology. She subsequently received her MD from Penn State University College of Medicine. After completing a residency in Family Medicine at Lancaster General Hospital, she went on to complete a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Ohio State University. She is board certified in Family Medicine with additional board certification in Primary Care Sports Medicine. She has over fifteen years experience in private practice both in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. During this time, she has also worked as a Team Physician both at the hIgh school and intercollegiate levels (Division l and Division lll). She has also worked at the elite level with USA Hockey, and with the US Olympic Committee including being part of the Medical Staff for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

About Our Services

Appel Health Services, a nationally accredited ambulatory care facility, is open Mon-Fri. from 8.00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sat. from 10 AM to noon during the academic year.

Health care visits are by appointment. There is a Self-Help Center that provides guidance for self treatment of minor health problems including colds, headaches, cramps, nausea and diarrhea. Students who are ill are encouraged to contact Appel Health Services (AHS) as early in the day as possible in order to provide same day services.

Emergency

  •  Call Public Safety at x3939 or call 911 and then Public Safety to assist you.
  • Go to the emergency rooms:
    • Lancaster General Hospital, 555 N. Duke Street (fast track available).
    • Lancaster Regional Medical Center, 250 College Avenue.
  • Psychological Emergencies:  During the Academic year, call Counseling Services, 717-291-4083 and press "0" to reach the answering service and the on-call counselor.  During the summer when Counseling Services is closed, call Lancaster County Crisis Intervention, 717-394-2631 or go to the closest hospital emergency room.  
     

Non-Emergency

  • Call Appel Health Services (x4082) and leave a message. A nurse will respond when Appel reopens.
  • Call the 24-Hour Blue's on Call line 1-888-258-3428
  • Ask HA for help.
  • Call Department of Public Safety (x3939) if assistance is needed.

Travel Medicine

AHS provides physicals, some immunizations and written prescriptions for students traveling abroad for educational or personal reasons.  Any student who wishes to make an appointment must present their  required paperwork in advance  to the office staff before an appointment is made so that the appropriate amount of time with the practitioner can be scheduled.  Students must schedule travel abroad appointments within the allotted time periods during the semester (no later than one month prior to their departure date).  A Study Abroad Questionnaire must also be completed and dropped off before your appointment. ( See Forms and Links to download appropriate form).  Appointments will not be scheduled the week before any scheduled College break or during Saturday hours.
