General Safety Guidelines

  • Follow all safety rules and safe work practices applicable to your work area.
  • Think before acting; determine what safety and personal protective equipment you will need to perform your job in the safest manner, and determine what procedures must be followed to help assure you and your co-workers will not be injured.
  • Be aware of your surroundings as you complete daily work tasks; watch for tripping hazards.
  • Familiarize yourself with the location of exits and fire extinguishers.
  • Assure exits, fire extinguishers, and stairways are not blocked.
  • Inspect tools and other equipment prior to use. Assure all required machine guards are in place.
  • Inspect wires on appliances and equipment before using to assure they are not worn or frayed.
  • Do not overload electrical sockets.
  • Do not run electrical cords across walkways or pedestrian traffic areas.
  • Get assistance before lifting heavy or bulky objects. Use safe lifting techniques (see Safe Lifting Techniques for more information).
  • Assure proper posture and positioning when using a computer (see Safe Computer Use for more information).
  • To help reduce the risk of slips and falls, keep your work area free of clutter. Clean spills immediately.
  • Keep file drawers closed when not in use to reduce the risk of trips and falls. Avoid opening more than 1 file drawer at a time to reduce the risk of a cabinet falling over.
  • Wear all personal protective equipment required for the job, every time you do the job.
  • Wear appropriate footwear based on weather conditions.
  • Store equipment, tools, and chemicals properly.
  • During evening hours, contact the Public Safety Office (717-291-3939) if you'd like an escort to another location on campus, or to your vehicle. For more information, visit the Public Safety website.
  • Promptly report all on-the-job injuries to your supervisor and to Human Resources. Report "near misses" to your supervisor so they can be investigated in an effort to prevent further occurrences. Report unsafe conditions to your supervisor or Facilities & Operations; don't wait for someone else to make the report. Use the Occupational Injury / Illness Report to report work-related injuries or illnesses.
