As you prepare to arrive on campus this Fall, please be aware that you will be required to provide and use your own mobile phone, using it exclusively as your means of voice communication, as land lines in our residence halls will no longer routinely be provided. We will be moving more towards a voice over the Internet (VoIP) system and adding features that improve connectivity and safety and security.
Since the rapid acceptance of mobile technology on campus and a survey that demonstrates that use of land lines in College housing has been rapidly diminishing for a few years, we have decided to move in this direction. Should you request a land line to be installed in your room, an E-mail must be sent to F&O via the E-mail "repairs@fandm.edu" and your request will be considered. You should understand that a fee of $150 will be charged to your student account, if the line is activated. At that point, you will also be responsible to arrange toll service by use of credit card or pre-paid card.
It should be noted that plans are under way to improve mobile phone reception all across campus but especially in the residence halls and specifically for customers of Verizon and Cingular since, in our survey, we have discovered that more than 85% of all students carry these phones. Hall phones that currently exist on all halls will not be removed so for on campus calls, especially to Public Safety, and for local calls, these phones will still be active and available.
