We have chosen this illustration of the city of Nuremberg as a logo for to the Local Economy Center because it symbolizes our mission well. Printed in Nuremberg in 1493, the Nuremberg Chronicle was “at the cusp between the medieval and the early modern period” and expressed the Renaissance thirst for knowledge. The Chronicle was at the beginning of a new mode of representation that made maps and illustrations central to the construction of knowledge. The Local Economy Center is, similarly, at the beginning of an initiative to map the economy of our community with as great a degree of detail and as comprehensive a level of coverage as possible. With time, our representation of the social and material circuits of our economy will grow as richly and precisely as has the representation of the natural world that modern geographers have produced by building on the modest beginnings of representation of earlier times.
