Retired Army Gen. John Keane, an early advocate of the troop surge in Iraq, comes to Franklin & Marshall College on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Barshinger Center for Musical Arts to discuss the effectiveness of U.S. military action in Iraq and the state of the Middle East.

He is also expected to talk about what he believes are the national security challenges facing the incoming Obama administration.

Keane has had close contact with Iraqi military and political leaders during and after his retirement from the military in 2003.

The talk is free and open to the public.

Keane achieved the rank of four-star general during his 37 years in military service. He retired as acting chief of staff and vice chief of staff of the U.S. Army. Keane was in the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, and provided oversight and support for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was also a national security analyst for ABC News.

Since 2004, Keane has made several trips to Iraq. He has played a key role in recommending the surge strategy in Iraq and has been featured in many articles and a number of books, including The War Within by Bob Woodward.
