More than 300 students packed the atrium of Steinman College Center to watch Alpha Phi’s annual “Alpha Male” competition on Friday, Nov. 4.

The Alpha Phi-Zeta Sigma chapter, one of Franklin & Marshall’s four sororities, sponsors the event each year to raise funds for the Alpha Phi Foundation, which supports women’s heart health. The Zeta Sigma chapter raised more than $3,700 for the foundation through this year’s event.

Alpha Male is a beauty pageant in which male students compete in interview, swim wear, talent and formal wear segments. The winner is chosen by the audience; the contestant who receives the biggest monetary donation is crowned champion.

Sixteen male students from various fraternities, sports teams and organizations participated in the competition. The contestants sang original songs, danced, performed stand-up comedy and played the piano. In the end, the top three contestants were Darrius Moore ’14 of IMPACT; Ian Kar ’13 of Delta Sigma Phi; and Brendan Wengerter ’13 of Phi Sigma Pi. Moore steadily crept up the list during the competition, and his drum performance wooed the crowd for the victory.

The show’s intermission included performances by The Chessmen and Desifusion.

Alpha Male is one of two on-campus philanthropy events the sorority hosts during the school year to raise money for the Alpha Phi Foundation.
