Imagine it: Summer in Tuscany.

The sun. The rolling hills. Visiting churches, museum and archaeological ruins. Intermediate and advanced Italian courses.

Why not spend part of the summer studying Italian in Italy? Franklin & Marshall College offers a five-and-a-half week, faculty-led program from June 3 to July 10 in Vicchio di Mugello, a charming Tuscan village just 50 minutes by train from Florence.

It’s one of several faculty-led programs F&M offers in Europe, Asia and Central America.

“For some students, a full semester abroad is a greater commitment than they are able or willing to make,” said Giovanna Faleschini Lerner, assistant professor of Italian, who co-leads the program with her husband, Scott Lerner, associate professor of French and Italian.

The program in Vicchio is an intensive language and culture immersion program. Students can fulfill the language requirement while gaining a deeper cultural understanding of Italy. The classes will be taught by the Lerners, who know Vicchio well.

“Students speak Italian not only during class but also with local people,” Faleschini Lerner said. “Unlike big Italian cities, crowded with tourists, Vicchio gives students the opportunity to live and become integrated in the local community and learn a lot about the Italian way of life.”

Florence, the city of Leonardo di Vinci, Machiavelli and Michelangelo, is a short train ride away. “Vicchio can be an excellent point of departure for independent exploration of Italy, which is absolutely encouraged,” Faleschini Lerner said.

The deadline to sign up for the Vicchio program is fast approaching. Interested students must register by Dec. 1. For more information visit the Italian Department.
