Staying Safe

 Emergency Contact Information

In case of an emergency while off-campus, contact on-site program staff first. On-site staff will typically notify F&M, but you also may want to follow-up with F&M directly.

To notify F&M of an off-campus emergency, call the Office of International Programs at 717-358-7187 (Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm). To notify F&M of an emergency outside of regular business hours, contact F&M Public Safety at 717-291-3939. Public Safety will contact the appropriate International Programs staff person.

Tips for Staying Safe

Register your trip: Registering your trip with the US Embassy is a helpful resource in case of an emergency while you are living and/or traveling abroad: https://travelregistration.state.gov

Pay attention to on-site orientation information: Your host program will provide important safety information during your on-site orientation. It's important that you listen carefully and take advice regarding safety. On-site staff live and work in the destination you are studying, so they are the experts!

Be aware: Pay attention to where you are, who is around you, and how you might be presenting yourself. Travel in groups when out at night and don't carry expensive valuables.

Stay connected: Update on-site staff, family and friends of travel plans.

Stay sober: Alcohol impairs your judgment and the risk of unsafe behavior increases with its use. Remember, laws regarding alcohol use vary from country to country as do cultural norms regarding alcohol use.

Carry contact information: Keep a copy of the emergency contact information for your program with you at all times.
