Should you use winter recess to recharge your intellectual batteries and catch up on sleep after (hopefully not) too many overnighters studying for finals?  Certainly.  Should you capitalize on this time to secure summer internships and post-graduate employment while unfettered by academic and extracurricular commitments.  Absolutely!  Here are some ways you can use winter recess to secure that coveted opportunity:

  1. Network. Network. Network.  Holiday gatherings. Open afternoons to have coffee with F&M contacts of influence.  Evenings reconnecting with friends attending other institutions.  Take advantage of these occasions to connect with and find connections to individuals who work in industries and organizations of interest to you.  If you are unsure about how to start this conversation or locate contacts of relevance, you can call or  theOffice of Student and Post-Graduate Development (OSPGD), which will be open most of winter recess.
  2. Finalizing the Resume and Social Media Brand.  Do you have a professional resume or curriculum vitae ready to email on a moment’s notice? Are your LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter accounts reflective of an accomplished, well-regarded college student?  If the answer to either of these questions is “no,” you should spend the necessary time over winter recess to finalize a professional resume or vitae and create a social media brand consistent with your career aspirations.
  3. The Job Shadow: Experiencing a Day in the Life.  While many employers will not offer an internship over break because of its abbreviated length, very few will reject a request for a job shadow.  A job shadow offers you the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a professional working in an occupation or organization of interest to you.  The more job shadows you fit into winter recess, the more clarity you will have in your opportunity search and the more connections you will have made for summer and post-graduate employment.
  4. Applying to Opportunities.  Many industries have already begun recruitment for summer internships and post-graduate employment.  It is, therefore, not too early for you to start applying to those highly-selective opportunities in December and January.

For more suggestions and assistance with any of these steps, call or make a telephone or Skype appointment with your Student Development Adviser at OSPGD.  Let us help you maximize your internship and post-graduate employment search over winter recess!
