Dear Parents,
The members of the Class of 2011 proudly tossed their mortarboards in the air on Saturday, and this week we have members of the Class of 2015 coming to campus for Beginnings. Along with the new class, we are also excited to welcome Vice President and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Daniel Lugo to the F&M community.
You recently received an email from Lawrence Bonchek, M.D., P’91, chair of the Franklin & Marshall Board of Trustees, announcing that President Porterfield’s Inauguration Weekend this fall will encompass Family Weekend and Homecoming. I encourage you to mark your calendar for September 23-25, 2011, which will be a celebration weekend like no other. Much more information will follow on this in the coming weeks, so please stay tuned and consider making your hotel reservations now.
Enjoy the spring weather!
Best,

Did you know that F&M has a weekly online newsletter? The Diplomat, which publishes every Thursday during the academic year, is the best way to stay apprised of news and events on campus. Signing up for weekly alerts is quick and easy. The Diplomat also includes links to the college’s Box Office and cultural events listings, as well as to campus, academic and athletic calendars.
Franklin & Marshall College has a pooled endowment of approximately $300 million -- modest by the standards of many similar private liberal arts institutions. The portfolio contributes about 12% of the operating budget of the College, defraying expenses and enabling programs.
The endowment investment portfolio suffered a significant setback during 2008-2009, as did the economy as a whole. Since that time, returns have rebounded and the portfolio value has been recovering.
Growing this endowment through additional gifts is particularly important for two reasons. One is to support academic excellence by enrolling the most promising students, one of the College’s most important strategic priorities. Including academically talented students of modest means, who otherwise would not be able to afford F&M, strengthens the fabric and diversity of the student body and raises the quality of education throughout the College. The other reason is to reduce the College’s dependency on tuition alone as its primary funding source.
More information on endowment management, including F&M’s principles of socially responsible investing can be found on the Endowment Report for fiscal 2010.
Do you manage a business or know people who do? Franklin & Marshall College participates in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program. The EITC Program provides a straightforward and cost-effective mechanism through which companies that do business in Pennsylvania can support high-quality educational programming in public schools. More information about the EITC Program can be found on the F&M website.
