Our Donor Story

The First Story

The Philadelphia Alumni Writers House house received its first and crucial donation, its first vote of support, from the Dodge family of Lancaster. With their gift of $450,000, Margaretha Dodge, Laura and Arthur B. Dodge III, and Lorraine and Andrew N. Dodge named the Philadelphia Alumni Writers House Reading Room in honor of Arthur B. Dodge Jr. ’47, who is the retired chairman of Dodge-Regupol Inc., Lancaster. The Dodges’ gift not only created the main performance space in the Writers House, it secured the creation of the house, and for this the entire Writers House community is very grateful.

The Second Story

Not long after, a group of Philadelphia alumni came together with a plan to raise the money to endow the operation and general programming of the Writers House. The Writers House is named after the more than 100 Philadelphia-area alumni, parents, and friends who contributed $750,000 to the project. Philadelphians who served on the committee that raised these funds are Patricia E. Crebase ’93, Leonard M. Klehr, Esq. ’72, and College trustees Susan Kline Klehr ’73, John L. Neigh, M.D. ’55, Andrew M. Rouse ’49, Henry B. Smith ’84, Committee Chair Arthur S. Taylor ’83, and Michael R. Walker ’70. Trustee Brian Hard and his wife, Janice, p’01, p’03 were also significant donors to the project. Overall, more than $1.3 million was raised for both construction of the house and for an endowment fund to pay for its operation. Additional generous gifts were made to provide special programming and resources for the house. The Richard J. Jacobs Family Garden provides a beautiful link between the new Philadelphia Alumni Writers House and the recently renovated Wohlsen Admission House. Richard J. Jacobs ’55 and Janet Jacobs made this wonderful gift in memory of their daughter, Karen Janet Jacobs, and in honor of their daughter, Kim Ann Jacobs.

The Third Story

It's true that the Writers House has only a first and second floor, but the stories continue to ascend and fresh chapters are written daily, as readers and writers of all ages, disciplines, and sensibilities convene here as a community.
